Tips For Planning an Easy, Intimate Dinner Party

With the holiday season fast approaching, many of us start to think about entertaining. Have you ever considered going beyond the basic potluck and throwing an intimate dinner party—something festive, maybe even a little glamorous—only to have feelings of overwhelm and self-doubt immediately quash your momentary excitement?

Maybe your mind started questioning your cooking ability, those mismatched dishes, your small house, the cost, incompatible friends, and on and on. If so, you are not alone! Very few of us see Martha Stewart when we look in the mirror!

But don’t close the book on hosting yet; there is good news! Creating a winning dinner party can be quite doable with some pre-planning, creativity, and relaxed expectations. As with almost any challenge we tackle in life, it’s all about breaking it down into small tasks. But before we do that, let’s consider the basic components of throwing a dinner party.

The Menu

The best approach, especially if you are new to hosting dinner parties, is to keep things simple. Sometimes less is more.  Consider a practically foolproof menu like roasted chicken with a medley of roasted veggies, some crusty bread, and a green salad. A tasty pasta dish or stir fry is also a popular crowd-pleaser.

Be sure to ask your guests about any dietary restrictions and include at least one or two items they can enjoy. In many cases, they will prefer to bring their own food. You can follow up with a simple dessert, like a mousse, or splurge on a treat from your favorite bakery. And of course, few people complain about a big platter of cookies this time of year!

Appetizers

Though not a must, offering appetizers for guests to enjoy with their drinks before dinner adds an elevated touch to the evening. Think of it as a way to set the tone—welcoming, relaxed, and a little indulgent—without spoiling anyone’s appetite. Simplicity is key here; most people prefer something light so they don’t feel too full before the main meal.

A classic charcuterie board is always a winner: a mix of olives, cheeses, crackers, and nuts provides variety and looks beautiful when arranged thoughtfully. You can also add seasonal fruits like grapes, figs, or apple slices for a pop of color and freshness. If you’d rather keep it even simpler, a bowl of spiced nuts or a plate of crudités with dip can be just as inviting.

Drinks

To avoid being stuck behind the bar, create a self-serve beverage station where guests can help themselves. A simple setup on a countertop, sideboard, or small table works perfectly. Stock it with a few crowd-pleasers: bottles of wine, a selection of beer, sparkling water, and perhaps a pre-mixed cocktail or mocktail for those who prefer something festive without the fuss.

For a seasonal touch, add a pitcher of eggnog or mulled cider—both instantly bring holiday cheer. You might also include garnishes like citrus slices, fresh herbs, or cinnamon sticks so guests can dress up their drinks. Don’t forget to provide plenty of glasses, napkins, and an ice bucket to keep everything chilled.

Ambiance

This can be the fun part! Above all, we want our guests to feel comfortable and relaxed in our home. This is doable with a few simple touches, whether we live in a tiny apartment or a spacious house. And if your home is already decorated for the holidays, you are halfway there!

Lighting makes a major impact. Setting the dimmers low and using candles on the tables will create an intimate atmosphere. Consider stringing small white lights to add a winter-wonderland look to your home. Fresh flowers or seasonal greenery are also an elegant touch. Finally, choose some mellow background music from Spotify or ask your Google Assistant to play dinner party music or instrumental holiday favorites.

Dishes and Linens

Remember, your closest friends aren’t coming over to judge your tableware—they’ll be perfectly happy with your everyday plates, glasses, and utensils. We all have those well-loved, mismatched items, and they’re more than enough to set the stage for a wonderful evening.

That said, if you’d like to dial it up a notch and add a touch of charm, consider browsing thrift shops, dollar stores, or discount home outlets. These places are treasure troves for affordable finds: elegant glassware, serving bowls, cloth napkins, table runners, candlesticks, and more. With just a few pieces, you can transform your table into something special without spending a fortune.

Neutral tones can create a chic, timeless look, while mismatched items bring personality and an eclectic vibe, or go full-on with the holiday theme. Remember, there are no rules!

Seating

When we picture a “proper” dinner party, many of us imagine a long dining room table set with matching chairs and place settings. But in reality, that setup isn’t always practical—or even possible. Many modern homes, especially those with open-concept layouts, don’t have formal dining rooms at all.

The good news is that a successful dinner party doesn’t require one. Sofas, folding tables, and extra chairs can create a relaxed, flexible seating arrangement that works just as well. Serving food buffet-style on a kitchen island or side table allows guests to fill their plates and settle into pockets of comfortable conversation.

Guest List

Deciding on a guest list can be tricky. Many of us have different friend groups that we have formed throughout various stages in our lives. In some cases, it can be fun to mix it up and introduce friends that you think would enjoy each other. Conversely, there may be some friends that you know won’t click for whatever reason.

Go with your gut, and remember that you don’t have to invite everyone you know. The goal is to create an atmosphere where guests can relax and enjoy themselves for a few hours with good food, laughter, and engaging conversation.

The Week Of

The key to avoiding overwhelm and chaos is planning ahead. You will thank yourself later. The last thing you want to do is save everything for the day of the party! The week of the party is a good time to shop for any non-food items you need. Take inventory of your dinner plates, glasses, utensils, serving platters/bowls, napkins, candles, etc. If needed, ask friends if you can borrow folding chairs or tables. And now is the perfect time to plan your menu. Make a list of everything you need. There are endless meal suggestions, recipes, and videos available online.

The Day Before

To ensure all the food is as fresh as possible, this is the best time to shop for groceries (and flowers).  Food prep can be done on this day as well. Washing and cutting veggies can be a huge time-saver. Some side dishes can be prepared today and heated up tomorrow. Also, get a head start on cleaning by vacuuming, dusting, and scrubbing the bathrooms—and if it’s in your wheelhouse, call in a cleaning service.

The Day Of

Make a list of your menu items and the cooking times to avoid being stuck in the kitchen when your guests arrive. Set the table and lay out the beverages while the food is cooking. Do any last-minute arranging as needed (hanging fresh hand towels in the bathroom). Lastly, before arrival, dim the lights, light the candles, lay out the appetizers, and cue the music!

Final Thoughts

Last but not least, take a deep breath, relax, and get ready to enjoy the evening! Easier said than done, perhaps, but keep in mind: while planning is essential, over-controlling rarely works. Welcome your guests, make introductions, and help spark conversation—but don’t try to orchestrate every interaction. Each person will shape their own experience, and that’s part of the beauty. So sit back, savor the moment, and raise a glass to good health, great friends, and the joy of being together. Cheers!
